Free Fire: how the mobile battle royale works
Free Fire is a mobile battle royale from Garena, out since 2017. Up to 50 players drop onto an island, loot weapons and fight while the safe zone shrinks. A match lasts about ten minutes, which is a big part of why it caught on.
How a match works
Free Fire was built for cheaper phones, which is a big reason it took off in places like Brazil, India and Southeast Asia. It runs smoothly where heavier shooters struggle.
- Drop. Everyone jumps from a plane and picks where to land.
- Loot. Grab guns, armor, med kits and grenades from buildings and crates.
- Zone. The safe area shrinks over time and the outside hurts you.
- Fight. Last player or squad alive wins. Solo, duo and squad modes are all there.
- Vehicles. Cars and bikes on the map help you outrun the zone or rotate fast.
Modes and characters
Besides the main battle royale, Clash Squad is a 4v4 round-based mode where you buy gear between rounds. Free Fire also has characters with their own abilities and pets, which is part of what sets it apart from other shooters.
Ranked modes exist for both the battle royale and Clash Squad, and the game runs a big esports scene with its own world series.
Free Fire vs Free Fire MAX
Free Fire MAX came out in 2021. It is the same game with sharper graphics and effects, and it plays on the same servers, so players on both versions can be in one match. The original runs better on older phones. In India, the original was banned in 2022, while MAX stayed available.
