New indie games of 2026 that broke through
2026 has been a huge year for small studios. A painting hide-and-seek game from a two-person team sold more than 20 million copies, and a cat-breeding roguelike sold a million in its first week. These are the indie games people bought and kept playing, in release order.

The 2026 indie hits, in order
- Mewgenics (February 10). Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel's roguelike about breeding cats and passing traits to the next litter. Over a million copies in week one.
- Super Battle Golf (February 19). Golf for up to 8 where you race to sink the ball first and sabotage each other with mines, guns and golf carts. From Brimstone and Oro Interactive, on PC.
- Slay the Spire 2 (March 5, Early Access). Mega Crit's deck-building sequel, with four-player online co-op from day one. PC, Mac and Linux on Steam.
- Mina the Hollower (May 29). Yacht Club Games, the Shovel Knight studio, made an 8-bit style action adventure. On PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, Switch 2 and PC, with a 90 on Metacritic.
- Meccha Chameleon (June 10). Hide and seek where you paint your own body to blend into walls and furniture. Made by Lemorion_1224 and Haganeiro, it passed 20 million copies by August.
- Moon Sweepers (October 23). Two developers, a moon to clean and 16-player lobbies. It outdrew several big releases on Steam in its first week.
- Probably Stolen (October 28). A cyberpunk shopkeeper sim from Questing Goose Studio and tinyBuild. The publisher says it sold over 200,000 copies within hours of launch.
What this year's indie hits share
Look at the list and two things repeat. They have a friend slot: Meccha Chameleon, Super Battle Golf, Moon Sweepers and Slay the Spire 2 are all better with a group on voice chat, and clips of those groups sell the game. And each has one odd idea you can explain in a sentence: paint yourself to hide, clean the moon, breed cats for a dungeon.
That last part matters most. The best indie pitch of 2026 fits in a text message.
Indie-sized games on your phone
Most of these are PC first. Roam is a free iPhone app full of small games with one odd idea each, and you can make your own from a sentence. Bonk It In is a pull-back-and-let-go mini golf game.
