Rage bait games: frustrating on purpose

Rage bait is content made to make you angry so you react. Oxford named it Word of the Year 2025. A rage bait game does the same thing with level design: it is hard on purpose, it laughs at your falls, and you keep trying. Here are the best kinds and Roam games that do it.

What rage bait means

Oxford University Press announced "rage bait" as its 2025 Word of the Year on 1 December 2025, after a public vote. It beat "aura farming" and "biohack". Oxford found the term online as far back as 2002, but its use roughly tripled in 2025.

In games, "rage game" is an older idea. Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy (2017) made people famous for losing an hour of progress in one slip. Only Up! (2023) and Pogostuck did the same with tall climbs. The rage is part of the fun, because the win feels huge.

How rage levels bait you

Rage games on Roam

Arms Too Long gives you one very long arm and one very tall tower, in the style of Getting Over It. Pogo Up is a skeleton on a pogo stick climbing eleven areas. Don't Look Down sends you up through a city hanging in the sky. To build your own rage level, describe it to Roam and tune it by talking: "remove the last checkpoint", "make the ice slipperier". Then send it to the friend who always says games are too easy.
