Shell Shockers: a shooter where everyone is an egg
Shell Shockers is a free multiplayer first-person shooter by Blue Wizard Digital, released on the web in September 2017. Every player is an egg with a gun. Take enough damage and your shell cracks. It later came to iPhone and Android in 2021, and it is still one of the best-known web shooters.
The modes
Rounds are short, and you respawn after you crack, so a bad start does not ruin a match. Many players join a quick game, play a few rounds and leave.
- Free For All. Everyone against everyone. Most kills wins.
- Teams. Red against blue on the same maps.
- Capture the Spatula. Grab the spatula and hold it to score for your team, while the other side tries to take it back.
Weapons and how to pick
You choose a main weapon class before you spawn, and every class also gets a pistol. The names are egg puns: the EggK-47 is the assault rifle, the Scrambler is the shotgun, the Free Ranger is the sniper rifle, and there are others like the Whipper and the Crackshot. The pistol is weak but quick, and it is often the better choice at close range when your main gun is empty.
Each class suits a style. The Scrambler is for close corners, the Free Ranger for long sightlines, the rifle for everything in between. Grenades are handy for clearing a hiding egg out of a spot. Playing earns currency that unlocks hats, skins and other cosmetics. Maps are small and full of crates, ramps and ledges, so fights start fast and end fast.
Tips for staying uncracked
- Keep jumping. A moving egg is much harder to hit than one standing still.
- Pick one class and learn it. Switching often slows down how fast you improve.
- Use high ground. Most maps have ledges that cover the middle.
- Reload behind cover. Most cracked eggs were caught reloading in the open.
