# Temple Run: grab the idol, then run

Source: https://roam.new/temple-run/

Temple Run is an endless runner by Imangi Studios, released for iPhone in 2011 and later on Android. You grab a cursed idol from a temple and run for your life while demon monkeys chase you. It helped make endless runners one of the biggest mobile genres.

## How it plays

Your runner moves forward on their own. Swipe left or right to turn at corners, swipe up to jump over gaps and roots, and swipe down to slide under branches. Tilt your phone to lean and pick up coins on the edges of the path.

Trip once and the monkeys catch up. Trip again while they are close, or miss a turn, and the run ends. The path gets faster the longer you last, so a run is always a race against your own reflexes.

## Tips for longer runs

- **Swipe early**: Turns come fast at speed. Swipe as the corner appears, not when you reach it.
- **Ignore some coins**: Leaning for every coin causes most early falls.
- **Upgrade the coin magnet and boost**: Spend coins on power-ups that make long runs easier.
- **Finish objectives**: Objectives raise your score multiplier, which matters more than distance alone.

## The sequels

Temple Run 2 came out in 2013 with better graphics, a giant demon monkey, mine carts and zip lines. Imangi has kept both games going with new maps and characters, and there are spin-offs based on films. All are on the app stores, not on Roam.

## Chase runners on Roam

Outrun the Boulder is a jungle chase runner with a boulder right behind you. Giant Boulder Escape is an endless runner where the boulder will not stop. WAYFARE is a horseback endless runner: one horse, one sword and the Pale Road. Each one keeps the same idea: something big is chasing, and you keep going.

## Make your own chase runner with Roam

Roam is a free iPhone app where a sentence becomes a game. Pick who runs, what chases and where, then change it by talking. Roam is rated 13+ on the App Store.

Try: "endless runner through a haunted mall, my friend steals a cursed plushie and a giant mannequin chases her, swipe to turn"
