Escape the Backrooms: find the exit with up to three friends
Escape the Backrooms is a co-op horror game by Fancy Games, based on the Backrooms internet legend about endless empty office rooms. It entered early access on Steam in August 2022, reached version 1.0 in October 2025 and came to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in May 2026. Up to four players walk, solve and run their way through the levels.
What the Backrooms are
The Backrooms started as an online creepypasta in 2019: a photo of an empty yellow room with buzzing lights and wet carpet, and the idea that you can fall out of reality into it. Fans built a whole map of numbered levels, each with its own look and dangers. The game takes that map and makes it playable. Its mix of the ordinary and the impossible made it one of the best-known internet horror ideas, and several games have been built on it.
How the game plays
Each level is a maze with a way out. Some are mostly about finding the exit in a space that repeats. Others have puzzles, codes or machines to start. Many have entities that chase you, so you hide, sprint and keep together.
With friends it plays like a group hike through a nightmare: one person reads a code, another watches the hall, everyone panics at the same sound. The 1.0 version has more than 30 levels and several endings. After 1.0, the studio Blackbird Interactive took over further development, with Fancy Games staying on as a consultant.
Tips for the levels
- Stay in voice range. Proximity chat makes groups that split up feel very alone.
- Mark the way you came. Repeating rooms are the main trick, so note turns and landmarks.
- Run only when needed. Noise and stamina matter when something starts following you.
- Watch the levels change. Each level has its own rules, so what kept you safe in one can get you caught in the next.
