Labubu game: the blind box feeling, playable
Labubu is a toothy, elf-like monster made by artist Kasing Lung and sold by Pop Mart in blind boxes, where you do not know which figure you get until you open it. It boomed worldwide in 2024 and 2025. A Labubu-style game is about that moment of opening the box.
Who Labubu is
Kasing Lung created Labubu as part of The Monsters, a world inspired by Nordic myths. The picture books came out in 2015. In 2019 Pop Mart started selling the characters as collectible figures, and the plush keychain versions later became a fashion item clipped to bags.
Blind boxes drive the hype. Each series has a set of regular designs plus a rare "secret" one, and you only see what you got after you open it. That mix of surprise and collecting is the same feeling as a loot box or a gacha pull, without needing a game at all.
What a box opening game needs
- A shelf to fill. Show empty slots for every figure in the series so you always see what is missing.
- A slow reveal. Shake, tear, peek. Half a second of build-up makes the reveal worth it.
- One secret. A rare design with a low drop rate gives people a goal.
- Duplicates that matter. Trade doubles with friends or melt them into points, so a repeat still feels useful.
- Your own characters. Labubu is Pop Mart's, so invent your own monster series instead.
