Learn to Fly: help a penguin get off the ground
Learn to Fly is a series of launch games by Light Bringer Games, a studio from Quebec, Canada. A penguin who wants to fly slides down a ramp, launches into the air and goes as far as it can. Each run earns money for better gear, so every try goes a little further.
The launch-and-upgrade loop
- 1. Slide. The penguin goes down the ramp and builds speed.
- 2. Launch. It leaves the ramp at an angle and flies until it hits the ground.
- 3. Earn. Distance, height and speed pay out money after the run.
- 4. Upgrade. Spend on a better ramp, gliders, sleds and rockets.
- 5. Try again. Each upgrade changes the next flight, and the cycle repeats until you reach the goal.
The series
The games started as Flash games on web portals. Learn to Fly 2 came out in June 2011 and continues the penguin's story right after the first game. Learn to Fly 3 sets its sights higher, all the way to the Moon, and it is free on Steam.
The loop is why the series lasted. The first runs are short and silly. A few upgrades later you are gliding past the spot you crashed into on your first try, and that feeling of progress pulls you into one more run.
Roam launch games
These are separate Roam games, not Learn to Fly, but each one is built on a launch and a distance score.
- Bacon Breakout. Hamlet the pig has wings and one way out. A slingshot launch for distance.
- Elon Mask Space Program. A rocket launch upgrade game. Start in the scrapyard, aim for Doge Planet.
