Run 3: running on the walls of a tunnel in space
Run 3 is a space runner by Joseph Cloutier, released in 2014 as the third game in his Run series. You play a small alien running through tunnels that float in space. Step onto a wall and gravity turns with you, so the wall becomes your new floor.
The tunnel trick
The tunnels are made of tiles with gaps between them. Fall through a gap and you drift off into space. The way around a gap is often sideways: move onto the wall, the whole tunnel rotates, and you keep running on what used to be the side.
Some tiles crumble when you step on them, some levels are dark, and some tunnels are boxes instead of tubes. In a box level you can still switch gravity to each side, but the turns are sharp corners instead of a smooth roll.
That one idea makes the game. Most runners only ask you to dodge left, right or up. Run 3 asks you to read the tunnel as a shape and pick which side of it to be on.
Modes and characters
- Explore Mode. The story mode, with about 300 levels split into level sets.
- Infinite Mode. A random run of pre-built levels for a high score. It is also where you collect Power Cells.
- Runner. The starting alien, with good all-round stats.
- Skater. Fast, but with a low jump.
- Lizard. Slow, with a high jump. Good for wide gaps.
- Bunny. Jumps all the time, which changes how you read every level.
A Roam runner and ideas of your own
Play the Ceiling on Roam is a rhythm driving runner where the road climbs up the walls. It is not Run 3, but it has the same moment where the floor stops being the floor.
- Tunnel through your street. The tunnel is made of houses from your block and spins as you run.
- Race mode. Two runners in one tunnel. Knock a tile out from under your friend.
