Mewgenics: the cat game from the maker of The Binding of Isaac

Mewgenics is a tactics roguelike about breeding cats and sending them to fight, made by Edmund McMillen, creator of The Binding of Isaac, and Tyler Glaiel, co-creator of The End Is Nigh. It came out on Steam on February 10, 2026, sold over a million copies in its first week, and reached consoles in September. It is cute on the surface and very strange underneath.

How the two halves fit together

At home you keep a house full of cats. Cats pair up and have kittens, and kittens inherit traits, abilities and sometimes odd mutations from their parents. Picking which cats breed is a long game: you are trying to raise a line of fighters that suits your style.

Then you pick a team and send it out on a run. Adventures play as turn-based tactical battles on a grid, against monsters and bosses. Cats can be hurt, changed or lost on the way, so each run feeds back into the house. A strong cat that comes home can pass its best traits on.

The humor is classic McMillen: gross, dark and silly at once. It is not a cozy pet game, even if the cover looks like one.
