Traffic Rider: the highway, seen from the handlebars
Traffic Rider is a motorbike game for iPhone and Android by Soner Kara's studio Skgames, the makers of Traffic Racer. You ride in first person down busy highways, weaving between cars and trucks. The faster and closer you pass, the more you earn, and one crash ends the run.
The modes
- Career. A long list of missions with goals like distance, speed or time. Clearing them is how most players unlock bikes.
- Endless. Ride as far as you can without crashing. Traffic keeps coming.
- Time Trial. Race the clock to cover as much distance as possible.
How scoring works
Speed is the base. Above a certain speed you start earning bonus points. Passing a car very closely adds a near-miss bonus, and on two-way roads riding in the oncoming lane adds a two-way bonus. Every bonus stacks on top of your speed, so a fast run with lots of close passes pays far more than a careful one. A crash ends the run, so the real skill is knowing when a pass is worth the risk.
Money buys new bikes and upgrades. The bikes are modeled on real types, and each has its own engine sound, which is a big part of why the game feels good. The first-person view from the handlebars, with the dashboard in front of you, is what made it stand out from other traffic games.
Tips for longer runs
- Hold your lane. Wide swerves cause more crashes than tight passes.
- Use the brake. Slowing for a beat when two trucks line up saves the whole run.
- Upgrade before you switch. A fully upgraded starter bike can beat a stock new one for a while.
- Learn the traffic patterns. Trucks are slow and wide, and cars change lanes, so give each a different gap.
