GTA 5 Online: where it runs, what it costs, and an iPhone option

GTA Online is the multiplayer side of Grand Theft Auto V. Its current versions run on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, it is a paid game, and there is no iPhone version. On Roam, a free iPhone app, you can play a top-down car-theft game with friends, or make your own.

Where to play GTA 5 Online

GTA Online comes with Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar's 2013 open-world game. You get it by buying GTA V, and on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S it is also sold as a standalone game since March 2022. On PC there are two versions, Enhanced and Legacy. Enhanced came out in March 2025 with the newer features, as a free upgrade for anyone who owns the PC game.

Sessions hold up to 30 players. You run heists, races, businesses and free-roam chaos with a crew. Rockstar still ships updates: A Safehouse in the Hills came out in December 2025, with mansions and a mission creator, and The Kortz Center Heist followed in July 2026.

Your crew should be on the same system. PlayStation, Xbox and PC players do not share sessions. Rockstar has not released GTA 5 for iPhone or Android. If you want a GTA game on your phone today, you need something else.

What happens to GTA Online when GTA 6 comes out

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar calls it a single-player experience and has not announced a new online mode. Take-Two's CEO has said the company plans to keep supporting GTA Online, and there is no shutdown date. For now, GTA Online for GTA 5 stays the place to play GTA with friends.

A free game like GTA on Roam

Roam has one game built on the same idea. It shares the core: steal a car, drive, cause trouble in a city. It is not GTA, not a port and not connected to Rockstar. It is a small top-down phone game, without heists, businesses or a story.

On Roam you describe a game in a sentence and it comes back playable. Then you edit it by talking, like "add a heist" or "more police". Friends can be in the game, not just in the lobby. Is GTA 5 Online free?

No. You need GTA V, or the standalone GTA Online on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. GTA V was given away for free on the Epic Games Store in 2020.

Can you play GTA 5 Online on iPhone?

No. GTA V and GTA Online run on PlayStation, Xbox and PC only. Rockstar has not made a mobile version.
